Hey all, Christmas is just around the corner! Treys House will be celebrating on Thursday evening with our Christmas Party. The party is at one of our members house, and Michael Clancey will be playing (just like our jam sessions!).
We have had an interesting month...one of our members has decided to move back from Austin. Jose was one of our first members, and he wanted to experience the excitement of fighting for disabled rights. He linked up with the Adapt office in Austin, and even went with them to Washington to protest medicaid cuts. (And, yes, he was even arrested in the Capital!). The great thing about militant activity is the energy, he told me. Getting arrested was not scary, because he was with 50 other people, people who were blind like him, mute, on crutches, in wheel chairs... Adapt paid the fines... The cuts keep getting made, and groups like Adapt keep "the needs of the target population" in front of our legislators.
But, living in Austin had its drawbacks as well. Jose missed the feeling of community and camaraderie he enjoyed at Treys House. So, he is coming home.
Jose is moving home because he feels like he gets the support he needs to be independent from others. He loves to talk, and he loves to argue, but he also loves feeling like he is in a family...and it is that support that goes well beyond what a provider offers. Members share what they know about services, encourage each other, raise each others up, not pull them down.
